As reported by New Eurasia.net, problems with water are becoming more vivid in the cross-border relations of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The recent visit of the Kyrgyz president to Tajikistan was sparked by the water problem which is mainly related to the delimitation of borders in Fergana Valley. As the article notes:
“…people do not know where their territory ends and the territory of another country starts.Â
[And]…as you remember recently on the border between the two countries erupted a conflict which involved not only the civilians but also the representatives of law-enforcement bodies of both sides….”
In order to avoid further conflicts, Rahmon and Bakiev ordered their governments to prepare an Intergovernmental agreement on prohibition of any economic activity along the border until the end of the process of delimitation and demarcation of this controversial watershed.
