Mexico: 5 Dams Have Reached Zero Level, 23 Have Less Than 10 Percent

Via Mexico’s Milenio, a rather dire report on the status of Mexican dam levels:

Of the 210 large dams in the country, five are completely dry , they have reached zero level of their storage capacity; while another 23 reservoirs are at less than 10 percent .

According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), the total stored in the 210 dams is 64,933 million cubic meters Mm3 , they are at 51 percent of their capacity, which represents a deficit of 26 percent, with compared to the historical average.

Of the total dams, 117 have less than 50 percent of their storage capacity ; 44 are between 50 and 75 percent full, 41 reservoirs have a filling level between 75 and 100 percent and only 8 have 100 percent storage.

Dams at less than 5 percent:

Two of the dams that completely dried up are in Querétaro : La Llave and La Venta; also two in Sonora : Ignacio R. Alatorre and Abelardo Rodríguez Luján, as well as the El Potosino reservoir in San Luis Potosí .

With just 1.11 percent storage is the De Gonzalo dam in Michoacán , in the same state, the Los Ángeles dam is at 3.14 percent. In Guanajuato , the Peñualitas reservoir is at 1.17 percent; in San Luis Potosí , the Valentín Gama dam has only 2.32 percent.

Also in Querétaro , the Constitución de 1917 dam is at 2.63 percent and the San Ildefonso at 3.44; in Sonora , the Cuauhtémoc dam is at 2.97 percent, in the State of Mexico , the Huapango dam is only at 3.61 percent, and in Hidalgo , the Vicente Guerrero dam is at 5.02 percent.
