Via Water Wired, a note that the current issue of Stygoscape focuses on the Guaranà aquifer – one of the largest reservoirs of groundwater in the world which is shared by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Current water storage is estimated to range between 37,000 to 55,000 km3 by various workers, a natural recharge of 166 km3 per year, which could supply drinking water to the world’s entire population for 200 years.
And, as may be expected, there are a myriad of claims on this water from a variety of regional players and, possibly, some international actors as well. Expect more politics to arise around this aquifer as freshwater resources grow more scarce in the years ahead.
